Description: We know that Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy offers a powerful roadmap for understanding and restructuring attachment patterns in couples. Yet many couples, especially those impacted by trauma, carry deep experiences of shame, emotional overwhelm, and a sense of aloneness that can make accessing and processing core emotions more difficult. Integrating principles from Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) into our couples' work can deepen our capacity to meet these moments.
AEDP brings a trauma-informed, experiential lens that emphasizes undoing aloneness by using the self as therapist to safely accompany them in their emotional experience. By weaving AEDP into EFT, therapists can more directly address shame, support clients in staying with and transforming core affect, and foster new relational experiences where partners feel seen, held, and no longer alone in their suffering, thus creating lasting change.
