Description: Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) helps families transform insecure attachment patterns into secure attachment relationships by creating experiences of emotional safety, accessibility, and responsiveness. Healing occurs when children are able to express vulnerable emotions in session and their caregivers respond in new, attuned ways. One of the most challenging aspects of this model is working through parental blocks to attachment while maintaining a strong therapeutic alliance. As therapists, it can be difficult to witness a child's pain when a parent is unable to respond effectively—or inadvertently intensifies the distress. The risk of
parents becoming overwhelmed by shame is ever-present. This presentation will explore common ways parents block attachment and provide practical strategies for helping families move through these barriers toward greater connection and security.
